Zach Aldave’s Exhibit: ‘Here’ at Journeys to Celebrate Pride Month

On June 4, 2023, Journeys Cebu welcomed a new exhibitor to the scene: Cebuano photographer and artist Zach Aldave, who debuted his 30-piece collection entitled "Is It Okay If I'm Here?" The exhibit is open to the public until June 30.

As you enter the intimate gallery space of Journey's Cebu, you are greeted by the familiar textures of a home - white lace draperies, a banker's lamp, an old photobook, vintage picture frames on the wall, and a trio of hung shirts waving like flags in the air. It feels as if you have slipped back in time, into Lola's merienda nook where you would wait to hear a story, ask personal questions, and spend precious time in dialogue. Cozy, curious, and inviting, this was the show curated by Bea Sagun to quietly usher you into Pride month and to mark the middle of this fast-paced year.

Zach Aldave poignantly conveys tenderness, homeliness, love, and nostalgia in his first solo exhibition. The 26-year-old photographer, well-versed in a range of subjects, particularly street photography, editorial work, and portraiture, palpably translates his personal introspection and ruminations into queer intimacy. The collection of images, featuring glistening bodyscapes in warm afternoon light or calm reassuring blues, reminds us of safe moments in a home and the ephemerality of love and life in general. “Is It Okay If I’m Here?” presents the experience of freedom versus forgiveness and posits an invitation rather than insistence.

In addition to Aldave's three-year training in the Fine Arts department of the University of the Philippines-Cebu, Zach's candid aesthetic was constantly shaped by creative briefs and photowalks around the city. As one of the prolific queer creatives of his generation, Zach continues to participate in community work and refine his sensibilities in imagery and music.

The month-long exhibition "Is It Okay If I'm Here?" is just one of Journeys Cebu's events for the entire Pride month. Innopub Media, together with Misfits Coffee, also held "Duets," a reading of the literary works of Lawrence Ypil, Martin Dusinberre, and Zach Aldave last June 14, 2023.

Visit Journeys: Art, Books, and Curious Things everyday from 1PM - 8PM in 368 Tojong Street., Cebu City. For catalog requests and inquiry, message @journeyscebu on instagram or call 09190085226.
